Charity dinner at PriceWaterhouseCoopers raises £3500 - 5th Oct 2008
A charity dinner held at PriceWaterhouse Coopers' Atruim on Sep 29th raised £3500 for Burma, bringing the total raised so far to over £50,000. After a three-course dinner, 68 guests listened to Alan Thompson speak on value-centred leadership. Wine, venue and event management were donated by PWC, and flowers by Margaret Tregoning, clearing a profit of £1200. A further £2300 was donated on the night. Special thanks go to PriceWaterhouse Coopers for swiftly coming to the rescue following a flood at Wragge's, the original venue hosts.
Schools appeal launched this week - 12th Sep 2008
Hundreds of Birmingham schools have this week been invited to participate in a £100,000 project involving the reconstruction and equipping of six schools in the Pyapon region of Burma. Each school has been emailed a seven page proposal, including educational facts and figures about Burma. "The projectworks out at £68.50 per pupil", said Phil Jackman, Director of Agapé Workplace Initiative in Birmingham, and originator of the Birmingham to Burma appeal.
Riverside Kushi Night - 11th Aug 2008
Despite torrential rain and flash floods, a second charity dinner at Kushi Balti on the 28th July was a hit. Restaurant owner Mr Ali Haydor served a two course banquet to 65 guests. Not only were diners treated to award winning cuisine, but also to live music from the local band “Birmingham City Stars Academy UK”. Guests enjoyed traditional Indian music as well as a few popular western numbers which were performed with much enthusiasm and talent by the five piece Asian band. The event was partly sponsored by Riverside Church's International Disaster Fund and was held to jointly raise money for Agapé's International Aid Relief work among Cyclone Victims in Burma, as well as for victims of flood damage.
Baverstock School support Burma Appeal - 29th Jul 2008
Baverstock School and Specialist Sports College have given their support to the Birmingham to Burma Appeal and have been raising money in different ways. Our teacher Mr. Bacciochi told us about the terrible things that were happening in Burma and how that if we all helped to raise a little bit of money we could really help out the people who were in need; giving them food, clean water and shelter. He explained to us that the smallest amounts of money we had could make a real difference to the people of Burma.
10% night Jul 28 at Cielo's - 25th Jul 2008
Cielo's Restaurant in Brindley Place has become the latest to support the Burma appeal through a 10% to Burma night after 7pm on Monday 28th July. As restaurant owner Chris Papachristofora listened to Phil Jackman suggest a 5% to Burma night on a slow evening, Chris became interested. But when he realised what is actually happening on the ground in Burma right now, he said, "Let's not do 5%. Let's do 10%."
Alan Thompson Dinner - 5th Jul 2008
25 people gathered at the Living Room in Broad Street to meet with the Head of Toshiba UK. "Running Toshiba UK is what I do one day a week", says Alan. But his main job is as Vice-President of Toshiba for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The gathering at the Living Room was in preparation for a charity dinner for Burma at Wragge's at the end of September. Alan loves the cut and thrust of the boardroom, as well as driving fast cars.
Eating for Burma - 5th Jun 2008
When Mohammed Ali heard about the read about the Birmingham to Burma appeal in the Mail, he immediately wanted to help, so he phoned our office. Just two weeks later, over 60 guests squeezed into the Kushi Balti in Balsall Heath, raising over £1000 for the appeal.
Burma appeal launched - 15th May 2008
A campaign has been launched by a Birmingham organisation which is hoping to save thousands of lives in the aftermath of the catastrophic cyclone which hit Burma.
